Prayer flags are used to promote peace, compassion, strength, and wisdom. It is believed that the prayers will be carried by the wind and bring good will to all beings. The smaller rectangle flags come in five colors to represent the elements. In Bhutan there are also tall white flags. These flags are vertical and attached to wooden poles. They are raised in remembrance of a person who has passed away.
