General StoreThe Valley Less Traveled: Western BhutanLocated in the Eastern Himalayas, Bhutan is a Buddhist country where "Gross National Happiness is more important than Gross National Product". It is in many ways a land steeped in history and mystery, having only opened for tourism in 1974. On its western edge, bordered by Tibet in the northwest, sits the District of Haa, the second least populated dzongkhag, or administrative district, in Bhutan. It is home to nomadic herders and two of the country’s most important temples. The valley was not open to tourism until 2002, and development of hotels was banned as an effort to retain a more traditional way of life. It remains one of the least visited areas in Bhutan.
