Santa María Atzompa
Sara shapes pottery in her home in the town of Santa María Atzompa, Oaxaca. The town is famous for its green glazed pottery. The Zapotec people have been making it here since the 7th-9th centuries and the nearby archaeological site uncovered ovens that are the exact same size and shape as those used to this day in Atzompa for firing the clay. The clay pieces are shaped and smoothed on a manual potter’s wheel then are dried for 8 days before they are fired in lots. The dark green glaze is added after the first firing.
