Santiago Atitlán
Maria, shown here with her daughter Candelaria and granddaughter Cruz, is from the lakeside community of Santiago Atitlán. Lago Atitlán (Lake Atitlan) is bordered by three volcanoes and several Maya villages. It is the deepest lake in Central America. Much of the population of Santiago Atitlán is Tz'utujil Maya. Many of the women still wear the traditional hand-woven huipil (blouse) embroidered with birds and flowers and the corte (falda in Spanish or skirt in English). Only a few, mostly older women still wear the bright red cinta that Maria wears.
