Corrida de Sortija

Corrida de Sortija

Gauchos watch the ‘Corrida de Sortija’ or ‘Ring Run’ contest. The game is another traditional gaucho sport whose origin likely goes back to Spain in the 16th century, perhaps even earlier. At that time the rider would have been armed with a foot long wood lance and steered their horses toward a tiny gold ring which dangled from a thread. The rider who successfully lanced the ring won it as a prize. These days the ring is still quite small but made of metal and hangs on a thread from a tall crossbar. Riders take individual turns galloping their horses full speed toward the ring and try to spear it with a small wooden stick as they pass underneath.
